Water Pollution- Effects

Water pollution is a very dangerous thing that can cause a variety of damages. The effects of this depends on what chemicals are dumped into the water, and where the water is located. Urban areas are usually more polluted than other areas due to factories and garbage being dumped in the water both legally, and illegally. A great example of this is the Boston Harbor. Sewage and toxic waste fill the water, and usually receives for waste then the rain washes into it. In water based ecosystems, the inhabits living there are killed by the polluted water. Beaches are becoming filled with dead animals that have been washed up on shore. The death of these animals is caused by the disruption in the food chain. Little animals eat ppollutants such as lead and cadmium, and then are eaten by larger animals. Those larger animals then die or are eaten by even larger animals. Either way the food chain is interrupted by the decrease in animals. Eventually at the end of this food chain is us humans. Hepatitis is a disease that humans can get from poisoned sea food. Humans were the ones that started the water pollution, but in the end it came back to "bite them in the butt." Here is a picture of an example of the effect of water pollution. It shows how hundreds of fish have died and now are just floating on top.

It simply amazes me how humans can be so stupid. People pollute the water and do not even realize what they are doing until they become extremely ill from eating poisoned sea food. It just does not make sense to me in any way. I had already known that water pollution was a serious problem and needed to be looked at more closely. What I did not realize was how it was effecting humans. I just hadn't put two and two together. I now realize that some of the sea animals that aren't dying are still poisoned and are being eaten by us humans. It is clear that this is a major problem, but needs to be advertised more to all people. Individuals that are illegally dumping stuff into bodies of water, need to be aware that they could face serious consequences if doing so. When I go to the beach in the summer, I do not want to see dead fish washed up on shore because of polluted water, and I surely do not want to be swimming in that. So, overall I think that this issue is very serious, and should be looked at more closely.

Questions:
1.) Why do you think humans are dumping garbage, toxic waste, and other things into the water?
2.) What do you think can be done to decrease the amount of pollution in the water?
3.) Do you think this problem will ever be fixed? Why?

  1. I think almost everyone knows how much of a problem water pollution has become, but that picture is just shocking. It's sickening that we have polluted the water to that extent. I completely agree with what you are saying about how ignorant humans are. Many people pollute because they don't care about the environment, but now it's affecting us and something needs to be done.

In response to your questions, i think humans dump waste into water because they do not realize that it will affect them, and no not care if it harms the environment. We can decrease the amount of pollution in the water by finding other ways to dispose of it, passing laws to prevent it from happening, and overall just creating less pollution. Considering many parts of the world are already feeling the effects of the growing water crisis, I think people will eventually be forced to take action against this problem.

I think this picture really shows how harmful water pollution can be to organisms living in polluted ares. Imagine what eating this fish would do to your body...

  2. Water pollution has become a huge problem. The sad part about the thing is that people know it's a big problem and they are still polluting. I guess now people are getting sick from the things they have done and after the whole thing they pollute again. I really never put the two things to together until now.I guess people do this in everything like in sport's when someone makes a mistake in football and get tackled for it but the next play the do the same thing, it just doesn't make sense.

In response to the third question I think people will never completely stop polluting. Because some people are to stubborn to ever change there ways no matter what.

  3. I always knew that pollutents in the water are harming the animals but I never really put together that we caused the pollution and now that pollution is coming back, almost like revenge. That picture to me is personally disgusting. I would never want to go to a beach and see hundreds of dead fish washed up on the shore. Once when I went to the beach I saw multiple dead jellyfish wash up on the shore and that stopped me from going in the water for the rest of the day.

In response to your first question I believe people are dumping so many pollutents into the water because they have no where else to dump these pollutents. Continuing on to answer the second question, we can create areas where we can dump these pollutents without them getting washed into streams so then there will be less dumping and healthier water.

  4. The problem of pollution in America has really become a large issue in the past couple of years, but the actual impact of this never really hit me until I saw this picture. It really brings to light the level of neglect that we show as humans doing this to the earth. Our high levels of pollution should have been addressed much earlier than they have been, but unfortunately now we're playing a dangerous game of catch-up and it seems (from this picture) that the pollution is winning this race.

To respond to question two, I believe that there are many ways that we could decrease the amount of pollution that, while may be expensive, will pay off by saving our water sources and our animals. We must start mandating the way that waste is dispensed IMMEDIATELY. If we do not then it will just lead to more dumping of this waste and more biological murder of fish and other marine animals.

  5. I feel like water pollution has always been a problem, I don't think that it was ever not a problem. I think people are doing this because they don't care about the ocean. I don't know why they don't care because if they keep doing this, a million sea creatures will die, and so many humans will get extremely ill from poisoned sea food. It amazes me how many people don't care for the earth in general. Doing this is destroying the earth and when the earth is no longer healthy, everyone will die.
