20% of watermelon crops are wasted each year for many reasons. The watermelons go to waste and are used for nothing. What if we could do something with these watermelons? Well the good news is, WE CAN! Watermelons can be use to produce biofuel ethanol. The juice can be used directly or as a nitrogen supplement. It is good for other reasons as well. After using the juice, it can be used for ethanol production.
I think that using watermelon juice as biofuel ethanol is a GREAT idea. If the unsellable watermelons are not being used at all, then why not use them as a fuel? I makes complete sense to take advantage of this and use the juice in a beneficial way. It does not make any pollution, and we are decreasing the amount of fossil fuels we are using. I have always wondered what unique things we could use as fuel, and i think this is very interesting! I would have never guessed that watermelon could be used as a fuel. I can relate this very easily, because everytime I eat fruit I wonder what farmers do with all of the bad crops. Now I know that they can be used as fuel.. well at least watermelon. Overall, I think this is and extremely good idea and could become very popular in the future.
1.) If you had the option, would you use watermelon juice as a fuel?
2.) Do you think using watermelon juice is a good idea or a bad one? Why?
3.) Do you think this will become more popular in the future?

I never would have even thought of watermelon juice being used as a fuel let alone food juice in general. It's surprising that it can even be used as a nitrogen supplement. It is good that we now have another supplement because now we can use the waste from watermelons instead of just throwing them away. This reminds me of the fossil fuel chart we did in class that one day. If we can find more supplements for energy we could use less of the fossil fuels so we don't waste them and lessen pollution.
ReplyDeleteTo answer emily's second question I believe using watermelon juice is a good idea but to a certain extent. It is a good supplement for nitrogen but then that means more watermelons would be used for energy and less to actually sell to humans. So if we limit the amount used for energy or just use the bad watermelons then I think its a great idea. To answer emily's third question I think it will become popular in the future. Maybe not the near future but it could become popular later because we may start to run out of nitrogen.
Watermelons are so good! Who knew that their juice could be used for fuel. 20% doesn't seem too bad, but after a while those numbers start to add up. Not using the wasted watermelons could increase pollution, while the pollution rate is already at a high level.
ReplyDeleteWe should definitely use the 20% that's wasted for fuel, if we don't use it wisely then later on in the future, we will regret it. And the the more resources we have, the better and longer lasting fuel we'll have.
